หลักการใช้ article นำหน้านาม
คือเมื่อกล่าวเป็นการทั่วไปนามนับได้เอกพจน์ จะต้องมี a หรือ an นำหน้าเสมอ
นามพหูพจน์และนามนับไม่ได้ ไม่ต้องมี article ใดๆเมื่อกล่าวเป็นการชี้เฉพาะจะต้องใช้ the นำหน้าเสมอไม่ว่าจะเป็นนามเอกพจน์หรือพหูพจน์ เป็นนามนับได้หรือไม่ได้
Articles แบ่งเป็น 2 ชนิด
Indefinite Article ได้แก่ a และ an ใช้นำหน้านามนับได้ ( Countable Nouns )
เอกพจน์ทั่วๆไป( Singular )
Definite Article ได้แก่ the ซึ่งใช้นำหน้าคำนามนับได้ ( Countable Nouns )
และนามนับไม่ได้ ( Uncountable Nouns ) ทั้งรูปเอกพจน์( Singular ) และพหูพจน์ ( Plural )
เพื่อให้นามนั้นมีความหมายเฉพาะเจาะจง
การใช้ Indefinite Article : a, an
1. ใช้ a นำหน้าคำนามนับได้ เอกพจน์ ขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะและมีความหมายทั่วไปในความหมาย หนึ่ง โดย
ไม่ต้องการเน้นจำนวน เช่น a woman, a dog, a dentist, a newspaper, a city , a book , a shop เช่น
He is reading a newspaper. เขากำลังอ่านหนังสือพิมพ์
2. ใช้ an นำหน้าคำนามนับได้ เอกพจน์ขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ และมีความหมายทั่วไป เช่น an orange ,
an umbrella, an hour, an article
คือเมื่อกล่าวเป็นการทั่วไปนามนับได้เอกพจน์ จะต้องมี a หรือ an นำหน้าเสมอ
